COUNCILLORS NEWS LETTER
Autumn 2015
HARVESTING GOOD NEWS,
Summer is nearly over and the harvest is coming in. It is pleasing to note that the government is pushing the interests of farmers with Europe; hoping for fewer inspections and simpler guidance which, if successful will benefit many in the rural areas. A single helpline for Rural Payments and Plant & Animal health, making life easier for the farmers, is to be introduced this autumn. I was fascinated to learn that the UK food industry, which includes farm production, contributes more than automobiles and aerospace together to the economy and we export food products all over the world including ice to Sweden, tea to China and chillies to Pakistan.
TREES
The Community Development Group, which I chair at Rushcliffe, have been looking at the Rushcliffe Conservation Strategy. We are losing large numbers of trees in our hedgerows across the Borough and one of the aims of the strategy is to encourage Parish Councils, farmers and landowners to access LEADER funding and Agri Environment grants to assist with the cost or planting and replacement. Further announcements on funding will be available shortly via a briefing note to the Parish Councils.
Nature Conservation Forum in East Leake
This year’s Rushcliffe Nature Conservation Forum will be held at East Leake Village Hall on Saturday 10 October. This is a free event to celebrate nature conservation activity in Rushcliffe and the many volunteers who contribute to it. They will look at woodland and grassland management, enhancing sites for particular species (focusing on bats, amphibians and reptiles) and planning for archaeology on sites. They will also be launching the third update of the Rushcliffe Nature Conservation Strategy, which will set the vision for the next five years. The programme will also include the RNCSIG AGM.
